welcome to the skeptic's world

2009 July 8
by gfish

I admit, the idea of a web based sitcom about an omnipotent deity sounds a little bizarre at first, but with talent and a sly sense of humor, Mr. Deity does a terrific job at making it work. In this episode, our deity turns off his omniscience to watch a magic show and comes away with a sense of wonder and amazement. But Lucy, aka the Devil, decides to play skeptic and illustrates the problem every skeptical blogger faces on a daily basis…

We skeptics are just like Lucy, playing the devil’s advocate (pardon the pun) to make sure that people have a good idea of what’s fact and what’s just wishful thinking as far as we can tell with the available evidence. We have no intention of taking away anyone’s sense of wonder or amazement, we just want to give them the facts and protect them from those who feel no compunction to live in the real world. To us, ignorance isn’t bliss. It’s dangerous and easily avoided. Besides, there’s plenty to be in awe about in the scientific world and there are a whole lot of things left to discover. So if you’re looking for jaw dropping amazement, an evidence-based view of the world will always deliver, especially when you’re talking about cutting edge science.

This site will not be visited by the very people who need to. However, as a fan of scifi, fantasy, and all things magical and mystical, and being an artist as well, I must remind you of what Wordsworth said: We murder to dissect.

Wordsworth may have murdered to dissect; others of us have [ahem] other motives…

    (Mooo-hoo-ha-ha-ha!)

“This site will not be visited by the very people who need to.”

I think you’d be surprised. Plenty of the very people I have in mind come to this blog every day and I have my fair share of their ridicule in the comment sections of many posts. Just take this monster of a debate for example…

Read through as much as I could take of the monster debate. So how much asprin do you have to take after one of these marathons?

    I think I’m one of Bayer’s best customers…

But seriously, none at all. In my opinion, triggering a huge debate with something you wrote should be the goal of any blogger so if anything, it’s more fun than stress for me. And as for having to tackle misconceptions, that’s just part of the job when you write about science.
