A few generations ago my ancestors were agricultural labourers. A few generations before that they were illiterate agricultural labourers. I have a PhD in physics and spent most of my life as a software engineer. If the people of two centuries ago had spent their money helping the poor instead of doing science I would be an illiterate agricultural labourer. And so would most of you.
